Despite it's name, the Great Cave is actually a man-made structure,
built for the Sixth Buddhist Synod. Called Maha Pasana Guha, it is
situated in the grounds of Kaba Aye Pagoda, 12 km north of Rangoon. The
cave is supposed to resemble India's Satta Panni Cave, where the First
Buddhist Synod took place shortly after Buddha's death. It was built by
volunteers and was completed in May 1954 after 14 month's work - it
measures 139 x 113 m. It is basically an assembly hall which can
accommodate up to 10.000 people. The only resemblance to a cave is that
it has boulders over the top of the structure.
