This year a new
tourist cave was opened near Weilburg in Germany. The cave was
first discovered by miners in the 1880's, but in spite of their
enthusiastic accounts about the natural
beauty, the cave was never opened to the public. In 1974 the Kubacher
Caving Club rediscovered the cave after opening some old mine-shafts.
After many years work
by the members of the Caving club, the cave was officially opened in march this year. The cave 200
meters long and 30 meters high, is
one of the highest show-caves in Germany. Unique in this cave are the walls,
which are covered with white calcite crystals.
Unfortunately the town of
Weilburg didn't use a special post-mark for the opening of the cave,
but the local stamp collectors group issued a post-card with "hohlenpost"
(cave-post).
A new post-mark will be issued in
December by our friends from the German Geology
Motif Group at the mineral-and fossil bourse in Giessen (not far from
crystal cave).
