El Pictartions -Africa |
The picathartes climb
the irregular rock walls of the caves they inhabit in order
to reach the high ledges on which they rest and nest in the most
unimaginable locations The picathartes live exclusively inside caves or
very near them. With the south american guacharo and tropical Asia's
swiftlets, they constitute the small unorthodox group of caverniculous
birds These birds do not confine themselves to the entrance of the caves
they live in; they enter far inside, where daylight becomes completely
imperceptible The picathartes are active during daylight. In the
evening, they retire deep into the caves they live in so as to sleep on
the ledges of the cavern walls.

Picahartes (Republique Togolaise) |
They only live in
large caves harboring rivulets that insure a humidity close to 100%.
Brosset has observed that these birds drink large amounts of water.;
They live on insects (cockroaches) they find in abundance on the bat
guano that covers the cavern floors … "
