Strangely, this Swiss stamp is cave related. In the nacelle of this
stratospheric balloon there were two men, Auguste Piccard and Max
Cosyns.

Max Cosyns is a well known caver. In 1951 and 1952 he was the leader of
the famous expeditions to Pierre Saint-Martin, in the Pyrenees, at the
French Spanish border (see for instance Haroun Tazieff, Le Gouffre de
la Pierre Saint-Martin, Arthaud, 1952).
Other stamps have been issued with the same subject, but Cosyns
accompanied Piccard only for the second flight (16,940 m) in 1932. For
his first flight (15,180 m), Piccard had taken Kipfer with him.
