Barbados 1977 Harrison’s Cave

 by Eef Smitshuysen

Serie of stamps showing the natural beauty of Barbados

In 1977 a serie of stamps was issued about the natural beauty of Barbados. There were four stamps in this series. The 5, 35, 50 cents and $ 1 .00 stamp. The five cent stamp featured the Barbados Underwater Park. This park is located at Folkstone in the parish of Saint James. The park is 2.5 kilometres long and 1 kilometre out to sea. It is zoned into two water sports zones, a scientific zone and a marine reserve zone. Many interesting farms of tropical marine life can be found here.

The thirty-five cent stamp shows a royal palm tree. Same of these were planted as early as 1870. They grow to a height of sixty feet. They may be found near the older 'great houses' or plantation houses in the island.

Development of the cave depicted in the otter stamps began in March 1976. Half mile of the three mile passage has been prepared for show. One of the speleologists who carried out studies on the cave is quoted as saying that it contains same of the finest displays that characterizes any cave in the world.

The features include bubbling streams, tumbling cascades, deep pools and forty waterfalls ranging from four feet to forty feet along with a myriad of stalactites and stalagmites.

The highlights include Great Hall which has thousands of stalactites and stalagmites and gives a view extending fifty feet downward. Explorers Pool, Twin Falls, Mirror Lake, Cascade Pool are same of the names given to same of the other features.

There is also the Rotunda Room where there are pure white and cream-colored formations including same helictites which extend as crystals in strange and interesting directions.

Just after finishing this article Mrs Gurnee wrote about the formation depicted on the stamp: it is at the overlook of the Great Hall, where large stalagmites are near the trail about 80 feet into the cave.
